Songwriting Basics: Why Is Structure Important?

 General, Music

When it comes to the essential tips for song writers, it’s hard not to notice that most of the advice given by experts focuses more on how to create a beautiful melody and lyrics to match. These are very important aspects of songwriting; however, there’s one important part of a song that is often overlooked – this is the song’s structure.

The reason why most songwriters don’t bother about the song’s structure is because this is something that develops as the song comes together. Coming up with a pattern of melodies fit for the song’s genre and theme often happens naturally throughout the songwriting process. There are no clear cut rules on how a song should be structured, but the way the parts of the song are arranged can spell the difference between a hit and a miss.

Each song writer follows their own system for writing songs. Many start with the lyrics, while others begin by composing the song’s melody. It is rare for song writers to begin with creating the structure for the song because this can be limiting in terms of expressing their ideas and emotion if they need to fit their melodies and lyrics to a particular format. Putting structure first may not be a good idea, but it is important to keep it in mind so that the flow of the song can be kept in check.

The structure of a song does not need to be complicated. In fact, one of the most popular structures used by song writers is the simple verse-chorus-verse-chorus pattern. A song can have more parts such as the bridge, refrain, or pre-chorus. A songwriter can utilize as many or as little of these parts as they want depending on the song’s theme and genre. What is important is that the song flows well, does not run too long, and does not confuse the listeners.

Following a formula in terms of structure makes songwriting much simpler as everything is already laid out. The verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus pattern is one example of a formula that has been used successfully by many song writers. This does not mean, however, that all songs should have this pattern. A good song writer must consider which pattern or structure would work well for the particular song they are writing. The best way to do this is to experiment with different melodies and arranging them in different ways until the song finally comes together.
